About this project
Project title: Automatic adaptation of administrative texts in Lithuanian to the needs of non-specialists (No. S-LIP-22-77)
In today’s society, written documents play an important role as an information channel, especially in the context of communication between institutions and their target audiences. The characteristics and special requirements of the administrative style make it difficult for non-specialists to read and understand texts of this style. Adapting texts using text simplification techniques removes some of the barriers that prevent non-specialists from quickly finding, reading, and understanding the necessary information in administrative texts. Help to find, read and understand the information provided in such texts is relevant for older people, learners of the Lithuanian language and the general public.
The aim of the project is to develop a methodology for the automatic adaptation of administrative style texts in Lithuanian by transforming them into plain language texts. Plain language texts aim to increase the accessibility of various documents to the general public in terms of their readability and comprehensibility. Administrative language differs from plain language in lexical, syntax, and other aspects. The task of automatic adaptation of texts by transforming them into plain language texts includes the application of methods and tools of the field of artificial intelligence, information retrieval, language technology, and linguistics. The methodology that will be developed during the project will enable the development and improvement of innovative solutions for information retrieval, automatic text summarization, and, in the future, tools for the adaptation of texts for people with special needs, thus contributing to the increasing of their independence in daily life. Duration of the project: 2022-2024. Project is funded by the Research Council of Lithuania.
